Severn Link’s New Captain - He’s Ready To Ferry!Posted: 10/05/2010
Meet the newest member of the senior team at Severn Link – our new ship’s captain Rob Hinton.
We believe in hiring the brightest and best talent for our ferries – and that doesn’t necessarily mean salty old seadogs! Rob is just 29 years old, but brings a vast amount of skill and experience with high speed craft to head up our second crew, having previously worked for Red Funnel Ferries in Southampton for six years.
Rob has already made history during his maritime career, for he was the youngest person in the 149-year history of Red Funnel to take 1st Command of a high speed vessel. It’s not just British waters which Rob has experienced, though, as prior to joining Severn Link he also worked for Holland America Line, Norsk Pacific and Bankline, taking him to the Caribbean, North Sea, Pacific Ocean, Far East and the waters of Alaska to name but a few. His experience covers not just high speed vessels such as the Severn Link FlyingCats, but also small coastal vessels and cargo ships.
It wasn’t only Rob’s skills as an expert seaman which appealed to Severn Link. Rob is a huge believer in personal customer service and is always keen to meet his passengers, find out more about them and ensure that their trip is as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Rob was keen to become involved with Severn Link as soon as he heard about the planned service. ‘I wanted to be part of the team from the start, a team that was starting something really exciting and with so much potential. There will be challenges ahead, big ones, but that’s another reason why I’m relishing the opportunity. I love the parts of Wales I’ve visited and I love Devon and the West Country in general to so it will be great to be able to help people experience these areas I already know and love. I’d also like to bring with me the customer focus that I’ve learned from the Cruise and Ferry industries, to give the customers that use us a reason to use us again.’
Rob was born in Dorset and raised in Fareham, Hampshire and trained at the Warsash Maritime Centre, graduating with a HND in Nautical Science and NVQ qualifications in Merchant Vessel Operations. He continues to live in the area with his wife Clare and his beagle dog Maddie. Away from the sea, Rob’s quite the sportsman – he was previously the captain of a 5-a-side football team and also loves skiing, cycling and golf, plus is looking forward to getting involved in pilot gig rowing with his Severn Link team members. As you’d expect from a man used to the open sea, one of his greatest loves is travel and he makes the most of his free time by experiencing as many new places and cultures as possible.
So don’t forget to give Captain Hinton a wave when you’re aboard the Severn Link ferry – although we’re sure he’d like you to call him Rob!
