Competition Information
The teacher or adult organiser should choose a theme which the children find of interest and from which they can choose an appropriate name for the ferry.
The themes which you can choose from are:
1. Celtic Mythology
South Wales and South West England not only share a common stretch of water – the Bristol Channel – but also a shared Celtic heritage, which reached Wales and England from Central Europe in the later Iron Age. Whilst Wales and Cornwall still retain a strong Celtic identity, the historical influence of the Celts is obvious throughout South West England. Celtic culture and history has shaped Wales and South West England as we know them today.
Your chosen name should be associated with the Celtic Mythology of your region, such as a Celtic god, story or monument. In Celtic mythology, gods were often overseers of a certain part of life; for example, the god of the underworld or the god of war. Other gods are associated with a certain story or event. When choosing your name, think about the Severn Link ferry service, what it represents and what it means to you, and try and choose a Celtic word, name or story which has a strong connection or relevance to this.
2. Landscapes and Geographical Points of Interest
South Wales and South West England are full of striking geographical landmarks and areas of natural beauty which often have fascinating stories and history attached to them. Travelling by ferry is about visiting new places, seeing new sights and creating memories. What place in your region do you think is the most beautiful or memorable? And why would it deserve to have a ferry named after it? The place you choose doesn’t have to be somewhere the ferry will travel to, but needs to reflect the same spirit of travel, adventure and excitement.
3. Famous People from, or associated with, South Wales or South West England
Boats are often named after people of note, or after people who are important to the area or the owner. Who do you think would be a worthy name to put to a ferry, who would act as a great ambassador for your region when visiting other destinations, and would carry people safely to new shores?
The person you choose can be real (alive or dead) or a literary figure. People who are well-known in the public eye as representatives of what is great about your area would be a good choice, but you can also consider ‘local heroes’ – people who have made a huge difference to your local town or county through their own positive actions.
Your entry should include the following:
- Your chosen ferry name and theme
- The reasons why you chose this name (between 50-200 words)
- School name & address (plus group name if more than one entry per school)
- The names of all the children within the group entry
- School contact name, telephone number and email address
You may also include the following:
- Drawings or illustrations to illustrate your name choice
- Stories written by the children around the theme or name choice
- Drawings or illustrations of the Severn Link ferry
- Letters from the children about places they would like to visit on the Severn Link ferry
Note:
Schools which provide a joint entry with a qualifying school in South West England of their choosing and have as such worked together on the naming project will be awarded additional points in the judging process. Please indicate within your entry which school in South West England you are working with. Please note, this is not a mandatory part of entering the competition and all entries will be judged on their own merit.
